Last year, when RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile hit the App Store, we all got very giddy at the prospect of being able to play the classic game on our iPhones and iPads. Unfortunately, that excitement all turned rather bitter once it became clear that the game was nothing more than a vehicle for yet another round of in-app purchases thanks to the free-to-play model that has taken over mobile gaming. Many sad faces were seen.
Thankfully, there’s some good news because RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 has now arrived on that very same App Store, bringing with it none of that in-app purchase nonsense and instead of being free to play, costs a reasonable $4.99. Rejoice, for someone out there may actually be listening.
As a look at screenshots of the game will show, the game features absolutely no gimmicky in-app purchases to get in the way of the fun, and the game itself is essentially a real, touch-based port of the original RollerCoaster Tycoon game from late 1990s that we all know and love, packed with all 18 scenarios that were in the PC version. Most importantly, though, it’s a game that does away with the idea of micro-transactions and instead, has the self-belief to charge a reasonable price up front. $5 doesn’t make RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 the cheapest game on the App Store, but it does strike us as a more-than-fair price for a game that could well take hours of your life away.
If you’re the kind of person that likes to take to social media to rage against the scourge of in-app purchases in games, then now is the time to stump up the cash to prove to developers that we, as gamers and app buyers, are willing to pay for great games. If we don’t, the free-to-play model with IAP will continue to take over the App Store.
