Calling all Trekkies: your long wait for the next installment is now finally over! Well, that is of course, if you were waiting for the Star Trek app, which is now available for those on iOS and Android. Director J.J. Abrams’ next Star Trek release – Star Trek Into Darkness – is set to premiere in May, and in order to tide fans over until then, Paramount has launched an app offering a plethora of content as well as the chance to grab some prizes.
Free of charge over at the App and Google Play stores, the app takes advantage of geo-fencing capabilities in order to offer location-based experiences, as well as a nifty audio scan function which can recognize and subsequently reward users for watching Star Trek Into Darkness content and media. There’s an image scan feature enabling users to interact with printed or real-world images, and a plenty of video, images and wallpapers to tide Trekkies over until May arrives.
There are also a number of exclusive, app-only offers available, and although the app is essentially one big interactive advert, it’s almost a must-download for any die-hard Star Trek fan. It’s not as though new Star Trek movies arrive particularly often, and there’ll certainly be a keen interest in the latest release.
The movie itself features follows Chris Pane as Captain Kirk, leading the crew of the Enterprise on a quest to capture what’s described on the IMDb as "a one man weapon of mass destruction." Although not a mahussive Trekkie myself, these large franchises always seem to coerce people into going to the movies, and Paramount is certainly on hand on this occasion to ramp up the pre-premiere hype.
The so-called "one man weapon of mass destruction" goes by the name of John Harrison, a rather innocuously named warlord which, it is rumored, could turn out to be a young Khan. Of course, the return of Captain Kirk’s nemesis from 1983’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan would certainly be a great little twist, but we’ll have to wait until it hits the screens before finding out what J.J. Abrams has come up with.
Until May 17th arrives, grab the app from the links below.
