Windows 8 users have been waiting patiently for the arrival of the official Facebook app for quite some time. Back in June of this year, Microsoft did their best to raise excitement levels by pre-announcing that the world’s largest social network would be releasing a native app for the platform along with other respected offerings like Flipboard. The privately held session during the company’s BUILD event even went as far as showing off the wondrous new apps on a touchscreen tablet device. The teasing and waiting is eventually over for Windows users as Facebook has released their official app just in time for the launch of Windows 8.1.
The developers over at Facebook have done a fairly impressive job of bringing everything that users would expect to the native Windows 8.1 application. All of the extremely important social functionality of Facebook makes an appearance in the app, including the ability to update a status with text, URLs and those all important photograph uploads.
The app is also location aware with the ability to tag geographical locations onto messages and timeline updates. Everything looks and feels fast and zippy with the touch controls working as you’d expect on an OS that is designed for touch.
Scrolling news feeds, private messaging, Facebook events and the ability to add and interact with friends is all front and center in the app, which in itself isn’t groundbreaking as all native Facebook apps have this support. Dedicated Windows 8.x features like Charm support have been integrated into the app making processes like attaching photographs to composed emails an absolute breeze.
The 11.1 megabyte download will certainly make a welcome addition to Windows 8.1 users who have been feeling a little left out by the Palo Alto company.
It is to be noted that the Facebook app wont work on Windows 8, there is a requirement to actually have purchased or updated to Windows 8.1 before this app can be installed.
Now that Windows 8.1 is available for everyone, you can Download Windows 8.1 final version for free now if you are already a Windows 8 user.
