In a pretty big move, OpenAI has just launched the official ChatGPT app for iPhone and iPad, eliminating the need to go through mobile browsers for access.
However, that is not all, the app brings with it support for Whisper; OpenAI’s speech-recognition tool, which means you can now simply talk to ChatGPT using your voice. Siri should start feeling a bit insecure right about now perhaps?
OpenAI tells us that Whisper’s been trained on multilingual data collected from the Web.
Whisper is an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual and multitask supervised data collected from the web. We show that the use of such a large and diverse dataset leads to improved robustness to accents, background noise and technical language.
While the rollout and the pace at which AI is beginning to evolve courtesy of the data it’s being fed through mass consumption may have some big names in the tech industry concerned, ChatGPT’s arrival on the iOS platform rings a more eminent question; what’s to become of Siri?
It has already been reported that Apple is working on its own AI tech for iOS, but a more recent report said that Apple’s Siri team is struggling to keep up with AI.
OpenAI says that the app will be rolling out in the US initially, but will be expanded to additional countries in the coming weeks. It has also confirmed that the app will also be rolling out to Android users soon.
