Unlocking your Tesla using your phone is pretty cool until you find out that your phone’s battery is dead and you’ve no way to charge it.
That’s something that happens more often than you might think, and now there might be a future where you can still unlock your phone using an Apple Watch instead.
That’s according to a new post on X by Tesla CEO Elon Musk after he replied to a comment by a Tesla owner who found themselves locked out of their vehicle after their phone’s battery died.
The Tesla owner says that they got locked out of their vehicle and had to borrow a phone to call their husband so that they could remotely unlock the vehicle using their phone instead. That’s obviously less than ideal, but when asked if Apple Watch support could be added for unlocking vehicles Musk replied with a “sure,” suggesting that things will improve in the future.
It isn’t clear exactly what Tesla has planned, but the Apple Watch does support being able to unlock vehicles even when the battery is flat — something that iPhones can do, too. That would require that Tesla change the design of its vehicles to add support for Apple’s CarKey feature, and that’s no good for those who have older vehicles.
Instead, it seems likely that Tesla will offer something different — but whatever it is, it’s sure to be better than finding yourself locked out of your car.
