New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has finally reached the end of its contactless payments rollout.
The end of the line means that all subway stations and bus lines across all of New York City now accept various contactless payments, including Apple Pay.
If MetroCards had sentience, then they would definitely understand that it is nearly the end-of-the-line for them as MTA’s OMNY (One Metro New York) system comes into its own. The system, which has been in the process of being rolled out for quite some time, allows riders of various public transport networks across the boroughs of New York to pay for their fares using contactless payment methods.
The OMNY timeline specifies that “rollout completion” should be finalized by 2023 and that MetroCard will stay in existence until then. The end of life is not here yet but the card’s days are numbered.
For Apple Pay users in New York, the new functionality means that things just got a little bit easier. The Express Transit feature allows Apple Pay owners to simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch on a compatible turnstile in order to pass through seamlessly. This negates the need to purchase a standard ticket using antiquated methods and should make the whole travel process a lot quicker and a lot more versatile for those who run their day-to-day lives with frictionless contactless payments.
OMNY is available at all subway stations and on all buses, allowing you to tap and go throughout New York City. You can use OMNY with your own contactless card or smart device. OMNY currently supports a full-fare, pay-per-ride option for now, including free transfers.
The office MTA Twitter account made the announcement by letting everyone in New York know that it’s “OMNY time” and that contactless fare payments are the best way to ride in 2021. With this stage of the OMNY rollout complete, the process will continue with expanded fare options in the next twelve months.
