Yesterday, we learned that the Nokia X Store had already been plucked from its native spot and distributed around the Android community by the folks of XDA-Developers, and now, the de facto home of hack-minded Droidsters has struck again. Significantly, member Kashamalaga has gotten the likes of Google Now, GApps – as well as the Play Store – up and running on the Nokia X, and it’s fair to say that the Finnish company’s attempt to deliver a strictly Windows-like experience on the open source ecosystem is already being fiercely challenged.
Since Nokia plans to launch the Nokia X family of devices throughout emerging markets, it’s unlikely that the user base will be as geek-minded as the folks of XDA. However trying to exercise an element of control over an open source platform like Android is going to be a tougher job for Nokia than the company might have anticipated, and with the new range having only been unveiled at the beginning of the week, the Windows Phone-style flavor of Android has already been pulled apart by the vultures of an Android-bent.
The fact that the folks of XDA have managed to get Play Store, GApps, and Google Now running on the Nokia X will probably have no bearing on Nokia’s ultimate goal, which is to curtail the low-end market, familiarize it with the tiled interface, before eventually wooing it into Windows Phone ecosystem. It is, however, interesting for us geeks to see just how apparently easy it will be for those on the Nokia X OS (read: Android) to revert back to something remnant of Google’s stock offering, should they so wish.
Nokia’s revised tactics have drawn praise from the tech community, and look to be the best possible strategy given the current circumstances. But the risk involved – Android is very easy to manipulate, after all – should not be ignored, and while the Nokia X, X+ and XL could lead a three-pronged assault that eventually pays dividends for Windows Phone and higher-end Lumia devices, it’s not without its potential drawbacks.
In the unlikely event that you happen to be in ownership of a Nokia X device, then be sure to check out the source link, where you’ll find info on how to go about getting these recognized Google apps up and running on your handset.
It will be interesting to see when a stable root method of Nokia X is available to everyone, along with the method to unlock the bootloader, which in turn will allow users to load custom ROMs on the Nokia X. When that happens, you’ll definitely hear about it from us!
