Sony today announced that it won’t be attending E3 2020, citing a mismatch with the “vision” of the event. This is the second time in a row that the company will be absent from the annual video games expo.
Expectant fans will have to wait a tad longer for further concrete info on the PlayStation 5 itself, though next-gen console games may yet be shown off at the event. Sony promises that it will have much to show at other events around the world, mentioning both future PS4 titles and the PS5.
Sony sent the following statement to a number of publications, including IGN.
After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year. We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.
Sony’s statement did not, unfortunately, let on when the company may finally offer a look at the PS5. We already know much of what will make the console tick, the new immersion-focused offerings afforded by its new controller, and a release window. All that’s left now is for Sony to take the wraps off of the console itself, but it seems it will be breaking tradition this time around by forgoing the E3 platform.
The console’s biggest competitor had its first showing over a month ago, with Microsoft using The Game Awards to unveil the Xbox Series X. It seems fans may have to wait blindly till Sony decides to give the PS5 the same treatment.
The PlayStation 5 is penned in for a holiday 2020 release. E3 2020 kicks off on June 9 and concludes June 11.
