Nintendo is primed and ready for an extremely busy holiday shopping season as we approach the nucleus of the retail frenzy ahead of Christmas. As part of that build up, the Japanese company has announced that it has hit an important milestone as far as sales of its Switch console are concerned by shipping 10 million units globally.
Nintendo originally started shipping the Switch approximately ten months ago in March. In that time, consumers around the world, which includes Nintendo’s loyal faithful and new purchasers, have seemed to instantly take the innovative hybrid console to their hearts, which is reflected by the internal sales figures released by Nintendo.
It was only a matter of months ago that the company also announced that Switch had been predominantly responsible for driving sales growth by 175-percent with net sales of approximately $3.29 billion for the six months ending September 30.
Previously, Nintendo had announced that in the first three months of trading it had shifted 4.7 million Switch consoles as the initial hype for the new hardware took off. That number had risen to 7.63 million by the end of September. And now, as we approach what is likely to be a final hectic push of sales during the festive season, Switch has been snapped up more than 10 million times globally.
Nintendo has initially stated that it wanted to sell 14 million units by March 2018, which would represent twelve months of availability. Based on the current numbers, and the current trajectory of sales from June onwards, there appears to be no reason why this won’t happen. Especially when you consider that there are likely to be price drops as we head into the new year.
Where gaming consoles are concerned, Nintendo’s Switch is an interesting proposition, and, as such, will never command the same level of sales as Sony’s PlayStation 4 or Microsoft’s Xbox One, which are the big hitters in this arena. Nintendo’s offering is a console that can connect to a television set very much like PlayStation and Xbox, but which also comes with portability and the ability to act as a handheld gaming device on the move. This uniqueness appeals to a lot of consumers but some will still remain hesitant about the experience.
