We might still be waiting for Apple to announce the iPhone 13 lineup in September, but that isn’t going to stop some people from looking beyond that. Now, a new report claims that next year’s iPhone 14 will benefit from a new material choice in the form of titanium alloy.
According to a JP Morgan Chase investor note seen by MacRumors, Foxconn will be the company tasked with producing the new titanium shell that will form part of at least some iPhone 14 models, although it isn’t yet clear whether it would just be the Pro units.
Apple currently uses aluminum when constructing the chassis for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12, while iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max benefit from stainless steel.
According to the report, the use of titanium alloy will be one of the biggest changes to the case design in the 2022 iPhone series, and Foxconn will be the exclusive manufacturer of the titanium frames for the high-end models.
While Apple has never used titanium in an iPhone before, it does have history with the alloy. It famously made a PowerBook out of the stuff, while there is an Apple Watch Series 6 wearable available with a titanium construction right now. The Apple Card is also made from titanium, too.
The same report also backs up previous rumblings that suggested Apple will kill off the 5.4-inch iPhone after the impending iPhone 13 mini launch, instead opting to launch two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch iPhones from next year onwards.
