It is strongly suspected that Google will unveil the sequel to the Nexus 7 at its recently-announced event in New York City later on this week at a dedicated Android event, and as well as having a rough idea of the device’s specs, it now looks as though we’ve a matching visual courtesy of Evleaks. The famed @evleaks Twitter handle, notorious for dropping photographic evidence of upcoming tech products, has leaked what appear to be press images of the 7-inch tablet, and with just a couple of days to go until this impromptu event kicks off, we’re inclined to suspect it’s legitimate.
Not only that, but Evleaks is usually spot on with these kinds of insights, so what we’re looking at is strongly likely to be the follow-up to last year’s ASUS-made device. Along with the announcement of the successor to the Nexus 7, it is also thought Google may finally introduce Android 4.3 officially. Leaked builds have been aplenty, with fans of the Google OS having dissected these ROMs to discover some of the new features, but no official word has been given on a release date.
The Nexus 7 of last year was the very first to ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean from the get-go, so it would make sense for Google to follow a similar release pattern this time around.
Hitting the sweet spot of being a highish-end tablet while also offering an affordable price point has seen the Nexus 7 revered by Android fans far and wide. The second edition is set to follow suit, adding an alleged 5-megapixel rear-facing camera as well as an improved quad-core Snapdragon processor and a slightly sharper display to boot.
As per the images, the build quality also looks to have been improved, with a smoother finish to the rear shell adding a touch of finesse. Of course, we’ll only really be able to tell if it is of a higher standard than its predecessor once it’s out there and the comparison videos begin appearing, but on first glace, the Nexus 7 2 looks fairly impressive.
According to the same source, the next-gen Nexus 7 will be available in two memory configurations: 16GB and 32GB.
With the Moto X smartphone also set to be showcased on August 1st, it’s shaping up to be a busy ten days for the Big G, and we’ll be covering each and every facet of both events right here at Redmond Pie, so stay tuned.
