Apple is expected to update the Apple Watch this fall, with the existing model now starting to show its age alongside more svelte, arguably more capable devices created by the likes of Motorola and Huawei. Apple knows that it needs to bring something new to customers, and it looks set to do it fairly soon. What that new, updated Apple Watch will bring to the table is currently the subject of much discussion.
That discussion has apparently stretched as far as talk of cellular capabilities, even within Apple, although a new report claims that the company has decided against such a plan following concerns that adding cellular to the watch would cause a delay in shipping – something Apple is apparently not willing to accept.
The main reason for the delay and subsequent canning of cellular support is said to be a concern over battery life, which is perhaps surprising, considering how well the current Apple Watch does on a single charge.
Even without additional cellular support, however, the updated Apple Watch is still set to be quite the update. Reports have Apple adding GPS for improved navigation as well as better fitness tracking. This, along with a smaller, or at least thinner design will make the device more appealing to those who want a smartwatch that doesn’t stand out quite so much but still offers the capabilities we have come to expect from a wearable device.
Apple had been in talks this year with mobile phone carriers in the U.S. and Europe to add cellular connectivity to the watch, according to people familiar with the talks. A cellular chip would have theoretically allowed the product to download sports score alerts, e-mail and mapping information while out of an iPhone’s reach.
During the discussions, Apple executives expressed concern that the cellular models may not be ready for release this year and that the feature may be pushed back to a later generation, according to the people.
The altogether more capable Apple Watch is expected to debut this fall, though it is unclear at this point whether it will replace the existing model, or simply bump it down the food chain a little.
