New York Attorney Sends Out Consumer Alert Over AirTag Stalkings

Apple’s AirTag item tracker continues to be used as a way for people to stalk their victims or locate vehicles for theft and while Apple is making changes to combat that, they have yet to kick in.

Now, New York Attorney General, Letitia James has sent out a consumer alert that contains “Safety recommendations” relating to AirTags.

The recommendations largely follow what Apple also recently said in terms of making sure to keep an eye out for alerts on iPhones that warn when an unknown AirTag is nearby. AirTags will also make an audible alert, something else that people should be vigilant for. Those using Android phones can also download the Tracker Detect app to help them find AirTags that are with them but shouldn’t be.

Across the country, Apple AirTags are being misused to track people and their belongings to cause harm. Tracking people without their awareness or consent is a serious felony and will not be tolerated by my office. I urge all New Yorkers to pay close attention to their belongings and follow the tips provided by my office to stay safe. New Yorkers’ safety is my top priority and my office will continue to do everything in its power to protect New Yorkers.

Apple’s AirTags are of course not the only Bluetooth trackers on the market, but they are among the most accurate and continue to receive bad press.

Apple recently announced changes to the Find My system that could potentially help, but the fact remains that anything that can be used to locate something — or someone — can be misused in this way.

While some have called for AirTags to be neutered or discontinued altogether, both seem unlikely outcomes at this point.
