Fans of watching movies at home are in for a good time after Universal Pictures signed a new deal with AMC Entertainment that will see movies arrive on iTunes and the Apple TV app just 17 days after they make their theatrical debut.
This news is a huge shortening of the “theatrical window” that normally sees movies only released for rental 75 days after they were first shown at cinemas. Now, new movies will be available in little more than two weeks.
At a time where people aren’t going to cinemas as much, if at all, this news is great for anyone who doesn’t want to have to miss out on the hot new movies coming out of Universal Pictures.
While the move is one that is surely brought on to combat the loss of theatrical sales due to the coronavirus pandemic, this will hopefully signal a shift in the longer term, too.
The thought of being able to watch a blockbuster movie at home, day and date with its theatrical launch, is something we could only dream of until very recently. Now it looks to be closer than ever.
Universal is already charging $20 for new rentals at a time where standard ones sell for just $5. But while that price initially seems large, it really isn’t when compared with a trip to the cinema. Especially if you’re buying tickets and concessions for the whole family.
