The SD Association is the group that is responsible for setting the standards used by memory card manufacturers around the globe. Those standards ensure cards with all devices and now there’s a new specification for them to support. Welcome to SD 8.0; and boy it’s fast.
It’s so fast that it will allow transfer speeds of u to 4GB per second thanks to its use of PCIE 4.0 and NVMe interfaces.
If those sound familiar it’s because they’re usually reserved for some of the fastest SSDs around.
That 4GB per second is around four times faster than the current maximum of just 955MB per second. Those kinds of jumps are unheard of and this could be huge for those who constantly move massive amounts of data from cameras onto computers.
The bad news is that the specification is brand new which means there are no SD cards that support it yet. And even when there are, you’re going to need the correct hardware to take advantage of them.
That’s probably not going to happen quickly, but there’s one silver lining to Apple not putting any kinds of card readers in its MacBook Pros anymore – you can just buy a card reader, rather than a whole new notebook.
You’re welcome!
