Sonos is reportedly getting ready to bring Dolby Atmos support to some of its speaker lines. A new 9to5Mac report cites an anonymous tipster who says that we can expect the Playbar, Sub, and Play:5 to all get new models as soon as June, with Dolby Atmos thrown in for the first time.
The arrival of Dolby Atmos is a move that would be very popular among those who live in the Sonos ecosystem.
Apple semi-recently added it to its Apple TV box, a device that many Sonos systems are hooked up to. With Dolby Atmos being the new standard for high end home cinema systems it stands to reason that Sonos would want to bring it to market.
9to5Mac notes that Sonos filed two new FCC application last month, suggesting that new products are on the way. Sonos has form for filing things with the FCC around a month before they are made available, putting a potential June release window firmly into the realms of possibility.
There’s no indication of what else the new updates might bring, but support for Apple’s AirPay 2 is possible.
Finally, what about AirPlay 2? The existing Sonos Play:5 does support the feature, so we would expect any new version to also offer the capability. The existing Playbar does not support AirPlay 2 by itself, so it is possible that Sonos adds it with the rumored 2020 revision.
One thing is clear, though – now would probably be a pretty bad time to buy some Sonos kit.
