Over the last few weeks, we have been hearing numerous reports about the future of Apple hardware and the purported changes which Apple is planning to implement while going forward. One of those major changes is set to be revealed with the announcement of the next-generation iPhone, is the move away from the existing 30-pin dock connector to a smaller connection that is reportedly going to be a 19-pin setup. The change in connector on the iPhone makes perfect sense considering they want to move the headphone socket to the bottom of the device, but if the latest reports that are surfacing are true, then we could be introduced to the new 19-pin connection on all iOS devices in one swoop.
The marvelous and ever resourceful world wide web is reporting that with the initial change to the new iPhone, Apple will go all out with their iOS range of gadgets and introduce the smaller dock connector on the new iPod nano, iPod touch, the reported iPad Mini as well as the current-generation iPad that was released in March of this year. In the case of the iPods, the new iPhone and the iPad Mini, if it exists, it is understandable as we are about to see a total refresh anyway, but when considering the current 9.7-inch iPad, it would mean pushing out an updated model mid-term.
As mentioned earlier, it does make sense for Apple to introduce a smaller connector, and users should be more than aware that evolutionary changes are always part and parcel of any device refresh. With that said, the change isn’t without its complications for users who have purchased third-party accessories that fit perfectly with their current 30-pin iOS devices. It looks almost nailed-on that Apple will be introducing their own adapter accessory which allows the gap between old and new to be bridged, but in some instances, this just won’t cut it and isn’t practical. It seems that for some users, the need and desire to upgrade and have the latest shiny device will also produce the need to fork out for newer versions of their beloved accessories.
As things stand, it still looks as though Apple is planning on unveiling the shiny new iPhone to the world in a media event on September 12th, meaning we only have a few weeks to wait. We aren’t sure about device pre-orders, but a possible release date of nine-days-after-announcement could be something to pencil into your diary for an impromptu sick day from the office.
