Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series of devices are now on sale which means that you can get your hands on them right now, assuming you got your preorder in quickly enough.
Now, it’s become clear that the boxes that they come in have a fancy new security feature that is designed to prevent old or fake iPhones from being sold as genuine ones.
The new feature was first reported by the X leaker Majin Bu who shared images of the special ultraviolet-sensitive mark that has been placed on new iPhone boxes. The mark only appears when a UV light is aimed at it, and it’s clearly designed to ensure that people can tell if an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro box is genuine and sealed by Apple.
9to5Mac notes that the reason for this is likely that some resellers package used devices as new, or fake ones as genuine.
Although this is a small detail, it can be enough to stop someone from buying an iPhone that isn’t actually new or genuine. For example, some sellers repackage used or refurbished devices as new, using fake boxes that are replicas of the original ones made by Apple. These devices are then sold at like-new prices.
It’s likely that Apple will also start to put the same UV mark on other iPhone boxes as well, but we’re seeing it first on the new models that were only released to the public today.
