If we can manage to pull our eyes and attention away from the ongoing legal battle that is currently being disputed between Apple and Samsung, then it is worth noting that both companies have some new and exciting going on behind the scenes. Both companies are continually pumping their resources into the design and development of new products, and considering Samsung is currently the world’s largest smartphone vendor, with Apple in a close second, they are battling it out in the marketplace as well as the court rooms.
In terms of what both companies have up and coming, it looks as if Samsung is attempting to strike the first blow and capitalize on the excitement by unveiling the next-generation version of their Galaxy Note smartphone. The new Note will be released as part of the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event that will be taking place in Berlin with August 29th. Once upon a time, we might have turned our noses up at a release of a product like this, but the rather large Galaxy Note has been surprisingly successful since its original launch.
The Samsung Mobile Unpacked event is being held two days before the IFA, an event that will also see the largest names in the consumer technology industry descend on Berlin to showcase their wares. One of the interesting things about the announcement date is that depending on Apple’s intentions for their own media event on September 12th, it could be coming two weeks before the iPhone makers introduce us to their latest product, meaning we could be about to see an all out assault on the smartphone market.
You may remember the mixed attention which the original Note received when launched by Samsung. The device was referred to as a “phablet” due to the sheer physical size of it and the fact that it could have quite easily passed as a small tablet device rather than a smartphone. Things don’t look to have changed much with the new version with some reports suggesting that Samsung has opted for a slightly larger display on the next-generation Note that is said to be unbreakable. Under the hood we are expecting an improved processor and a better quality embedded camera.
I guess we will never know whether or not Samsung has changed their release plans to ensure they get an announcement out before Apple, but it will be interesting to see the evolution of a device that was slated by the media when first launched, but that ultimately turned out to be a commercial success for the Korean company.
