Apple is reportedly ready to launch a new, budget version of its ever-popular AirPods wireless earbuds with a new report claiming that the so-called AirPods Lite offering is thought to be set for a launch later this year.
Further, it’s also thought to be ready to announce updated AirPods Max in 2024.
The report, which is based on a new investor note by analyst Jeff Pu that was seen by 9to5Mac, claims that Apple will launch new AirPods based on a “low-cost model”.
In the report, Pu explains that AirPods production will ramp up later this year “thanks to the launch of a low-cost model.” Pu’s report focuses broadly on the impact of AirPods production on Apple’s overall supply chain and its partners. In total, Pu says that AirPods volume will dip by 4% year-over-year in 2024 to 55 million units due to “muted demand for existing models.”
Pu didn’t get into details about what the new AirPods Lite will offer, nor how Apple will find a way to reduce the price further than the current AirPods line.
This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen suggestions of a cheaper version of the AirPods however, with supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also having said much the same thing previously. It’s been suggested that a price point of around $99 is to be expected.
