While no matter what you do buying a Tesla Cybertruck is going to see you handing over a princely sum of money, it’s now at least $7,a500 cheaper thanks to its eligibility for a $7,500 tax credit.
After it was initially announced to start at just shy of $40,000 back in 2019, the electric truck is now on sale with a starting price of double that — a whopping $79,990.
That’ll get you the All-Wheel Drive model with its dual motors, while the tri-motor model will add a cool $20,000 to the sticker price. However, the dual-motor version is now eligible for IRS tax credits after an updated list of vehicles went online at FuelEconomy.gov.
As InsideEVs points out, the tri-motor model isn’t included in the credit scheme, so you’ll have to settle for one fewer motor if you want to save that $7,500.
The tri-motor Cybertruck is not eligible for the tax credit because it exceeds the $80,000 MSRP cap, but the dual-motor All-Wheel Drive version can benefit from a $7,500 cut if the credit is applied at the point of sale. This means that the truck’s price effectively goes down to $72,490 without destination and taxes. It’s still a far cry from the $49,900 that was advertised back in 2019, but it’s something.
Tesla is of course getting ready to launch an entry-level version of the EV truck at just under $70,000 which could fall to around $53,000 with similar tax credits. But we’ll have to wait and see before we can be sure on that.
