Netflix recently announced that intends to bring its own games to the App Store, with Android already getting in on the act. But the way it will do so on iOS has been questioned — will the games be available via the Netflix app, for example. It seems that the answer is no, they won’t.
As the likes of Microsoft have already found out, Apple won’t allow a single App Store app to house multiple games.
It’s also something game subscription outfit GameClub has had to deal with. Like those companies, Netflix looks set to have to put each of its games into the App Store separately, with users signing in via their Netflix account to authenticate.
That’s according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, writing in this weekend’s Power On newsletter.
Because of Apple’s ban on all-in-one services, the current individual app implementation on Android of the Netflix service gives us a preview of how the Netflix offering will function on iOS.
Netflix has been actively testing games on iOS, and—according to code discovered by developer Steve Moser and shared with Power On—Netflix will release all of its games on Apple’s App Store individually and let users launch the games via the Netflix app. They won’t all be downloadable and playable within the app itself.
This all makes plenty of sense and while it might not be the seamless experience many might hope for, it isn’t a complicated situation, either. Now we wait for Netflix to do what needs to be done to bring its games to iPhones and iPads.
