Netflix Goes Global, Launches In 130 New Countries, Check If Yours Is On The List

Streaming video giant Netflix has gone global after it announced that it would be opening its doors to 130 new countries today, taking the total number to have access to its streaming library to a mind-boggling 190 countries worldwide.

The announcement, which came at the company’s event during CES 2016, was previously expected to simply include expansion to India. While still significant, that Indian launch has also been joined by countries such as Russia, UAE and Indonesia, though China is not on that list. Netflix had been rumored to be working with Alibaba to bring Netflix to the Chinese people, but given that company’s launch of its own subscription service, that partnership now appears to be dead in the water.

The list of countries that won’t be getting Netflix any time soon includes “Crimea, North Korea and Syria due to U.S. government restrictions on American companies,” Netflix said in a statement, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Those that do now have their first access to Netflix will be paying the local equivalent of Netflix’s US-based subscriptions. Viewers in India, for example, will pay 500 INR (roughly $7.49) per month for the basic, standard definition, single-user package. Netflix Standard (HD and two screens) and Premium (ultra-HD and four concurrent screens) will set Indian customers back 650 INR ($9.75) and 800 INR ($11.99) respectively each month.

Unfortunately, it appears that simply having access to Netflix doesn’t mean that all of the best content will be there. Initial reports suggest that content will vary depending on the country in which it is being watched, which is something that those outside the United States have been complaining about for a while now. Netflix in your country may be great news, indeed, but the shine gets taken off pretty quickly when you can’t watch your favorite movies and shows.
