Netflix is now making use of a new Apple API that allows it to link users out to the web in order to start a new subscription.
Previously, Apple required that apps use its in-app purchasing systems when charging people for subscriptions, but that recently changed.
Now, following pressure from governments and developers, Apple has a new API that allows what it can send reader apps to link to external payment methods via the web. In this instance, that’s what Netflix is doing. Apple is keen to make sure users are aware that by paying for Netflix outside of the App Store, it isn’t responsible should anything go wrong.
Netflix hasn’t allowed customers to subscribe via the App Store for some time, regardless.
Any accounts or purchases made outside of this app will be managed by the developer “Netflix.” Your App Store account, stored payment methods, and related features, such as subscription management and refund requests, will not be available. Apple is not responsible for the privacy or security of transactions made with this developer.
This API is only available to developers of apps that are used for viewing content, like Netflix and similar streaming apps. The same would also apply to apps like eReaders and similar ones.
