Apple HomeKit users can now make use of their Nest Thermostat in their Home app on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. And it’s all official with no need to do any hacks or jump through any hoops as well.
That’s because Nest now supports Matter, something that ensures that HomeKit support is thrown in for good measure.
Matter is a new standard that means anything that complies with that standard will work equally well with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa which isn’t something we ever thought would happen.
Great news! We’re rolling out Matter compatibility for our newest Nest Thermostat released in 2020. This means you can now adjust the temp and change your thermostat’s mode with multiple Matter-certified smart home platforms and apps.
The catch? This only applies to the Nest Thermostat from 2020 which means those with older models will need to upgrade if they want to take advantage of the new Matter support. This does make Nest one of the first thermostats to support Matter in this way though, so we should be thankful for that at least.
Nest says that the thermostat is getting the update starting today although the full rollout could take a few weeks the company told The Verge. If you aren’t seeing the update just yet, hang fire. It’s on the way.
