If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, but took the opportunity to pass on Apple’s recently released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the hope that rumors pertaining to the Google Nexus 6 might be true, then you could be in luck.
We’ve seen a number of leaks over the last few months claiming to show the potential technical specs and early benchmark results for the Motorola manufactured device, but a new report from 9to5Google claims to go above and beyond that speculation by confirming a number of details relating to the device’s specification, external design and feature set.
First of all, the jumbo-sized smartphone seems to go by a few names. Some corners are referring to the phone as the “Nexus 6“, whereas others are claiming the device will ship with the “Nexus X” model name attached to it. That decision is clearly yet to be finalized at an executive level, so for now we’ll refer to the device as the Motorola “Shamu“, which appears to be the internal name assigned to the hardware.
Motorola’s Shamu seems to follow the current trend of the smartphone market by bundling in a 5.92-inch 1440p display that takes it beyond what we would class as a phone and more into the infamous “phablet” territory.
In addition to the relatively large but beautiful display, the Shamu will reportedly ship with a Snapdragon 805 processor with an extremely capable 3GB of RAM. The same report makes reference to the fact that the hardware will come with an internal storage capacity of 32GB, but there’s no additional information as to whether that will be the only model offered by Google and Motorola, or if the device will offer mass appeal with lower and higher capacity versions.
An internal 3200mAh battery will give the device the juice that it needs to power that impressive display. There’ll also be a front-facing 2-megapixel camera as well as a powerful 13-megapixel offering on the rear.
From an aesthetic perspective, the design of the device is not too dissimilar to the second-generation Moto X handset. If the leaked renders of Shamu turn out to be accurate then you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s nothing more than a scaled up version of the Moto X, at least from a visual point-of-view. There’s no concrete information currently available regarding pricing of the device, or when it will actually land on our shelves, but there is a possibility that an announcement could be made mid-October with the handset shipping at the beginning of November.
