The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are again rumored to be in line for an upgrade to the Action button, similar to the one currently available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus don’t have the same button, but that’s all expected to change in 2024 when the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus replace those models.
We’ve been hearing rumors of this for some time now, and recent reports added to that by saying the new Action button will be a capacitive solid-state one, ditching the clicky button currently used.
Now, MacRumors reports seeing “extensive evidence” that confirms the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will also get the Action button next time out.
With the iPhone 16 lineup, Apple plans to add even more functionality to the Action button by changing the button from mechanical to a capacitive-type button. The revamped Action button, developed under the codename Atlas, is expected to function similarly to the Touch ID Home button on older iPhone models, or the Force Touch trackpad on found on more recent MacBooks.
The iPhone 16 lineup is also expected to get a new “Capture button” although it isn’t yet clear what that will actually do. It is believed that the button will function in the same way as the new Action button, however, so it will be capacitive if this report is accurate.
It’s also thought that Apple plans to bring the Action button to the iPhone SE 4, currently slated for a 2025 launch.
