Samsung’s Galaxy S series remains, in spite of the successes of the Galaxy Note in recent years, the company’s flagship range, and although the likes of the HTC One have shown a great deal of promise this year, it is still comfortably the boss of the high-end Android market. Now, we’re hearing reports of what some are already touting to be the Galaxy S5 specs, and it’s fair to say, if the revelations carry any weight, that the next big thing out of South Korea will be the beastliest yet.
Although the S4 has been successful, its release didn’t pass without complaints, and there seems to be a growing army of consumers who would like to see Samsung’s most premium handset treated to a premium finish. The plastic outer shell is more than substantial, but with the likes of the iPhone 5s and aforementioned HTC One lauded as beautiful, it does feel like Sammy – with so many smartphones released every year – should come through with at least one.
The latest report arrives courtesy of ZDNet Korea, which claims that Samsung is preparing for the launch of a new handset as early as February, and although the report doesn’t actually mention the S5, the level of hardware said to be packed into this alleged device inclines us to believe that it is.
The claims of a quad-HD, 2,560 x 1,440 display seem in line with everything else we’ve heard hitherto, and with Samsung also looking to take on Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint-sensing Home button with its own iris scanner, the battle of the James Bond-esque features can well and truly commence.
The iPhone 5s was also the first smartphone to pack a 64-bit processor, and it is believed that the Galaxy S5 will pack its own octa-core 64-bit Exynos SoC with some variants. Like the current Galaxy S4, there’s also likely to be a second major version of the device packing a quad-core Snapdragon chip, but each should contain a vastly improved 16-megapixel camera, 3GB of RAM and a whopping 4,000mAh battery.
We would expect Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box, and with the post also mentioning that it could launch in March, we shan’t have to wait too long to see if it is indeed everything we ever dreamed of.
