Microsoft’s Windows 10X release is designed for dual-screen computers, but it might not be ready to go until 2021. The news comes after Microsoft said earlier in the year that the software was being re-tooled to better support devices that only have a single display.
Now, according to a ZDNet report, those single-screen devices won’t be ready until spring of 2021 which in turn means those with multiple screens won’t come until the spring of the following year, 2022.
The report comes via ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley who has historically had the hookup at Microsoft.
I’m hearing Microsoft’s latest plan calls for 10X to debut on single-screen devices designed primarily for businesses (especially firstline workers) and education in the spring of 2021. And in the spring of 2022, Microsoft is aiming to roll out 10X for additional single screen and dual-screen devices, my contacts say.
It also sounds like we shouldn’t expect Windows 10X to support Win32 apps as was originally the plan. That will mean that anyone running Windows 10X will be limited to apps that run on the Universal Windows Platform or the web. Beyond that, you’re out of luck.
The good news? Foley says that Microsoft hasn’t completely given up on Win32, “but likely not until 2022 at the earliest”.
