Although Microsoft has a nice, intuitive mobile OS and a decent selection of handsets on which to run it, Windows Phone is missing one major component – customers. As such, we’ve seen a number of promotional, trade-in offers over the past couple of weeks, including a free Lumia 520 / 521 for those willing to pay $100 for an Xbox Music pass. But if you’re in the market for something a little more high-end, the latest offer from the software maker, which will net you a free Lumia 1020 or Lumia 1520 (albeit on contract) in exchange for an old Galaxy S2 / iPhone 4/4s, may just prove too tempting.
Developers continue to avoid the WP Store like the plague in favor of the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with it. The main issue is that so long as only a small, single-number percentage of smartphone owners rock the tiled interface of Windows Phone, there’s simply no value in making apps for it, and even though things have gotten a little better in recent times with the introduction of Vine and Instagram, Windows Phone users are still very much bereft.
The Lumia 1020 is, along with the Lumia 925, the most celebrated device on Windows Phone, and with good reason. The form factor may be a little top-heavy for some, but this is only because it must facilitate a 41-megapixel camera that is, according to numerous tests, unmatched in the mobile industry. Those taken in by its relatively powerful, sleek hardware and show-stopping camera may be tempted by the fact that, by trading in an old Samsung Galaxy S2 or iPhone 4/4s, the Lumia 1020 can be picked up free of charge, along with the Lumia 1520, from Microsoft retail outlets, and although taxes may, along with a 2-year contract, still apply, it’s still a pretty sweet deal if you ask us.
As ever, your device will need to be in a condition deemed satisfactory to the employee at the Microsoft Store, so if your handset has missing parts or is defective, you won’t be able to grab yourself a free handset.
But hey, with the Galaxy S2 and iPhone 4 /4s both seeming rather antiquated these days, you could opt for an upgrade, and a change of scenery, with the Lumia 1020 / 1520.
The deal will be available until March 2nd, so if you’re currently undecided, you’ve plenty of time to make your mind up.
