Microsoft Has Begun Adding Windows 10 Themes To Windows Store

First of Windows 10 themes are available now on the Windows Store. Here’s what you need to know about them.

When Microsoft announced the Creators Update at the Windows 10 event back in October, one of the new additions promised was official support for Windows 10 themes, distributed via the Windows Store. As you might expect, themes were promised to include things like custom sounds, wallpapers and color schemes that could be applied to Windows 10 en masse. Themes are nothing new, but this was all set to be the first time Windows 10 had access to distributed themes of this type.

Now, two months later, it would seem that the first of these Windows 10 themes have begun to arrive on the Windows Store.

Before you rush out to get your theming on, there is unfortunately some bad news. While the downloads are there for all to see on the Windows Store, they aren’t actually compatible with regular version of Windows. The same goes even if you are a Windows Insider running the latest beta build of Windows 10, so it looks like we will still need Microsoft to flip a switch or issue an updated beta before these new themes can be used officially, which is a shame.

We expect Microsoft to flesh theme support out in early 2017 though, so be on the lookout for a new beta release in the coming weeks and months.

Of course, where there’s a will, there’s a way, and if you’re a pro user, then there is a way to give these themes a try on the latest Insider Preview build. What you’ll need to do is head on over to WindowsApps in your Program Files directory and then go hunting for a .themepack file. This will be installed upon first run. Note that you will need to take ownership of the WindowsApps folder to access it.

It’s a bit quick and dirty, but it should work. Just don’t blame us if it deletes every last file on your computer. In other words, attempt this only if you’re confident you know what you’re doing.
