Microsoft has today announced an updated version of Bing search and the Edge browser, both powered by AI technology from OpenAI – the company behind the ChatGPT that has been everywhere online of late.
Microsoft announced the new pairing as part of a media event that saw CEO Satya Nadella talk about the lack of innovation in the search space and how Microsoft is going to change that with this new AI integration.
“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web.”
Nadella went on to say that today marks the start of a new race towards making better search, adding that it is “high time” there was innovation in the space.
Microsoft announced a new version of Edge to go with the new Bing, but it’s the search that’s the showstopper.
We’ve updated the Edge browser with new AI capabilities and a new look, and we’ve added two new functionalities: Chat and compose. With the Edge Sidebar, you can ask for a summary of a lengthy financial report to get the key takeaways – and then use the chat function to ask for a comparison to a competing company’s financials and automatically put it in a table.
The new Bing search is available on the desktop right now at bing.com, but only as part of what Microsoft is calling a limited preview. Users will be able to test the search and sign up for full access in the future, whenever that may be available. Only a limited number of queries are available right now, however.
