Meta Announces Quest 3S, AI Updates And New Styles For Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, Prototype Orion AR Glasses

At Meta Connect 2024, Meta has announced a number of new updates for its platforms, including budget-friendly Quest 3S headset and even a prototype of Orion AR glasses. Here are the details on these.

Meta Quest 3S

This wasn’t a surprise given all the recent leaks, and today, Meta made it official. Quest 3S is entry-level VR headset that is a mix between Quest 2 and Quest 3. It costs $299 and it’s much closer in specs to Quest 3 than what the price or name suggests.

In a nutshell, Quest 3S is pretty much same as Quest 3 except for a few differences: the 3S is slightly larger than 3 and has front sensors arranged in two triangular formations compared to Quest 3’s three pill-shaped cutouts. It also doesn’t have a depth sensor and the display is lower resolution compared to Quest 3 but same as Quest 2.

That’s about it. Everything else is same in 3S and at $299, the price is pretty compelling too.

Orion AR Glasses Prototype

Orion, according to Meta, are the most advanced pair of AR smart glasses out there. Currently in prototype stage, Orion integrates immersive capabilities of augmented reality – and it’s the result of breakthrough inventions in virtually every field of modern computing.

It’s important to note that while Orion isn’t a consumer product yet, it’s also not a research product and Meta plans to make it available to consumers in future but there isn’t any timeline provided for it as yet.

Orion has the largest field of view in the smallest AR glasses form to date. That field of view unlocks truly immersive use cases for Orion, from multitasking windows and big-screen entertainment to life-size holograms of people – all digital content that can seamlessly blend with your view of the physical world.

AI Updates for Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses

Meta’s now-popular smart glasses now come in new styles, including a transparent frame and transition lenses. As for software the Meta AI on it is getting updated to add reminders features that can help you keep track of your day-to-day things like maintaining a grocery list.

Meta AI on it is also getting more responsive as part of this update and Meta is promising a real-time speech translation feature coming soon to its smart glasses.
