Apple announced the tvOS 18 software update during the WWDC 2024 event on June 10 and while the software updates for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac took the headlines there are still some new features that Apple TV owners can look forward to.
One of those new features is support for Live Captions during a FaceTime call when using an Apple TV 4K device. The move means that users will see a live transcript of what is being said on a FaceTime call for the first time.
The feature will be a big addition for people who struggle to hear what is being said during calls or are deaf, and the fact that the FaceTime call will be shown on a big TV screen makes the feature all the more beneficial.
Those who install the tvOS 18 update will require a 2nd-generation Apple TV 4K or newer in order to use the new Live Captions for FaceTime feature so those who have an older model may want to consider upgrading now if this is something they think they will make use of.
However, it’s also worth noting that the feature will only be available in English and to those in the United States and Canada at launch. We would expect that it will roll out to additional countries and in more languages in the future, though.
The tvOS 18 software update is currently available to developers in beta form, but it won’t be made available to the public until later this year. It’s likely to ship alongside iOS 18 and the other big platform software updates in or around September if Apple sticks to its usual release patterns.
