Apple’s download and authentication servers will no doubt be taking a hammering right now as people clamor over themselves to download iOS 6 and install it onto their iPhones, iPads and iPod touches. The latest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system brings over 200 new features to users, with a notable amount of them being relatively large enhancements to the firmware. As is usually the case at the launch of a new major version of iOS, users who require a jailbreak are weighing up the pros and cons of the update, determining whether or not to go for it and live with a tethered jailbreak initially.
The first question that springs to mind when updating to the latest firmware is: what packages from Cydia are actually compatible with the new version of iOS? In most cases, it simply boils down to trial and error by actually updating, jailbreaking and trying to install your favorite tweaks to see if they work as intended. A lot of the time, the internals of the software don’t even changed, which means that Cydia packages should continue to work as they previously did on earlier firmware without any issue.
Thankfully, the jailbreak community is always willing to step forward and help each other out, and already a handy little spreadsheet on Google Docs has been created that allows potential jailbreakers to see if their favorite tweaks are confirmed to be compatible with iOS 6. Cydia is home to a huge mass of tweaks and packages, so it isn’t really possible to track and document everything, but as you might expect, the most popular and well-known creations have been covered.
A number of packages make extensive use of Ryan Petrich’s Activator tweak, so developers will be pleased to hear that Activator is confirmed to be working on iOS 6. All isn’t well in Petrich’s world though, as DisplayRecorder isn’t compatible with the latest firmware. This could easily be resolved with a simple change in download rules, but we will need to wait for the developer to push out that update before iOS 6 users can download the package.
The alternative Mulitfl0w app switcher by Aaron Ash is not compatible with iOS 6, although the Barrel tweak by the same developer is said to be 100% compatible. A number of packages that are said to not be working have a reliability on frameworks and libraries that are yet to be updated, so it is entirely possible that one simple update will result in a large amount of packages becoming compatible. Check out the Google Doc file (also embedded below) for yourself and see what the status is of your favorite tweak. If you are jailbroken on iOS 6 and have tried a package that isn’t on that list, make sure to update the doc and pay it forward.
