The iPhone 8 rumors continue to swirl, and while much of the talk has been about rear cameras and whether or not there will be a Touch ID sensor on the front or back of the device, the latest to come out of the wacky world of iPhone guesswork is actually related to the front-facing camera.
The rumor comes courtesy of The Korea Economic Daily, which claims LG Innotek will be tasked with providing the 3D facial recognition hardware for the upcoming flagship smartphone.
The report, which mentions a “new facility investment” worth around $238.5 million that will be dedicated to fulfilling Apple’s orders alone, claims that LG will “build a new plant” in order to aid the production of those facial recognition parts. The current thinking is that the hardware will be incorporated into the front-facing FaceTime camera of the iPhone 8, though it is as yet unclear whether this means we can expect a dual-lens camera setup or not.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities had previously also stated that the company is working on what was called a “revolutionary” new camera system for the front of the device, capable of 3D sensing thanks to software provided by PrimeSense. If that name rings a bell with you, it may be because it worked with Microsoft on creating the first Xbox Kinect sensor and was subsequently bought by – you guessed it – Apple. The Israeli company was picked up by the iPhone maker back in 2013.

Front-facing camera(s) aside, the iPhone 8 is shaping up to be quite the device if even half of the rumors circulating turn out to be accurate. Apple needs a big release this year having stuck to a largely familiar industrial design for three iPhone releases in a row.
If the iPhone 8 looks like what we think it might, then this year will not disappoint.
