Apple’s release of iOS 14.4 brought with it a new feature that, on the face of it, isn’t particularly big. But when you drill down, it could be pretty useful.
We’re talking about the ability to change the device type assigned to specific Bluetooth devices.
Those Bluetooth devices could be a speaker, headphones, or even a hearing aid and by telling your iPhone and iPad what kind of devices they are, Apple says that iOS will “ensure your Headphone Audio Level measurements are accurate.”
Telling iOS 14.4 what kinds of Bluetooth devices you’re using is super simple and there are five different types to choose from; Car Stereo, Headphone, Hearing Aid, Speaker, and Other.
Here’s how to specify a device type using an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.4 or later.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the I icon next to the device you want to edit.
- Tap Device Type.
- Select the device type.
You won’t need to do this with any of Apple’s devices, including AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. iOS is already well aware of what they are and what they’re capable of.
Give it a try and let us know if it changes anything in the comments or on social media.
