Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has become the go-to person for news on Apple‘s supply chain, and right now that supply chain is very much up in the air. Coronavirus and the Chinese factory closures that it has brought about continue to wreak havoc on Apple’s iPhone production and that isn’t changing any time soon.
In a new investor note, Kuo notes that the Zhengzhou plant is the most important to Apple’s iPhone business. It produces the iPhone 11 and will also be the key player in iPhone 9 production, too. It was scheduled to become operational last week, but while it does appear to be partially open, it’s far from running anywhere near 100%.
Foxconn’s Shenzhen factory is currently working on the development of the 2020 iPhones. Kuo notes that the development team didn’t stop working during the Chinese new year, but while the plant was supposed to be back online this week, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Pegatron’s Shanghai factory is said to be in charge of iPhone 11 as well as the new 2020 iPhones. It started work in February 2nd and seems to be working as if nothing happened. But the Kushan plant, said to be home of the iPhone 9, isn’t.
While Kuo hasn’t said what he expects iPhone shipments to look like with all of this going on, he did say that there are “uncertainties” surrounding iPhone numbers due to the ongoing issues in China.
