Kodi v18 Leia, which is the latest iteration of the extremely popular media center software, took another step closer to a public release today.
The distributed team behind the project has announced Release Candidate 4 (RC4), available for the brave-of-heart with immediate effect.
Most standard Kodi users will still be using the current major public release of the software on their various devices and platforms. To that effect, Kodi v17 Krypton has been put through a number of its own iterations in its lifecycle and will no longer benefit from updates but still remains the most stable version of the software. Kodi v18 Leia has been in development and testing for what seems like an extremely long time now, which is something that you would expect for this type of software.
The previous beta, alpha, and RC builds have been followed up with this RC4 release, which follows hot on the heels of RC released just 11 days ago.
So, just what is included with this RC4 milestone? Well, first of all, it comes with a public admission from the Kodi team that v18 Leia isn’t going to see a full and final public release this side of 2018. Given that we are approaching 2019 in just a few hours we had kind of made that deduction already but the team has stipulated that it “shouldn’t rush a release just for the sake of releasing.” And we can all agree with that.
As far as this RC4 goes, it’s all about bug fixing and eradicating niggling issues for the sake of those passionate testers who are actually using v18 Leia as their main build. The RC4 milestone has been closed in GitHub with a total of 39 issues successfully resolved, including fixes for missing dependencies, increasing the versioning and updating internal libraries, and numerous fixes for GUI issues throughout the platform. When merged together with the fixes and improvements in Release Candidate 3, you start to see the bigger picture and some light on when this major version increase could actually be released into the public domain as a full and final release of v18 Leia.
The team feels that v18 Leia RC4 is “quite solid” and been proven to be useful as a “daily driver,” but are you brave enough to give Leia a whirl?
