Anyone visiting the Photos & Video category on the iOS App Store will be more than likely be aware that Apple’s app marketplace is packed full of third-party camera and video apps that have been put before the public for purchase and download. Some of the offerings are fantastic and bring a whole new dimension to capturing pictures with an iOS device, while others are simply awful and don’t really offer anything more than the stock Camera app in iOS. The new KitCam app from GhostBird Software definitely falls under the bracket of being a must-have for iPhone and iPod touch owning photography fans.
The applications tagline describes the software as "iPhone photography at its finest", and in all honesty, it is quite difficult to disagree. The developers have gone all out to pack the app full of lenses, films and frames that can be used in conjunction with one another to create images that look simply fantastic. It may not seem like such a big feature, but the live preview of filters and camera attachments is something that so many apps of this nature just miss out causing photographers to waste the perfect capture opportunity.
KitCam features thirteen different lenses that allow users to add the tried and tested pinhole, tilt shift, fisheye and vignettes effects, as well as housing a whopping thirty different films that can be used to emulate the look and feel of vintage images. When a picture has been snapped and edited using the various effects and films, KitCam then offers eighteen different frames to choose from to put around the picture and add the finishing touches. All of the included frames, lenses and films can be used in live preview mode to see exactly what a specific scene will look like before capturing it.
The live preview mode also extends to allowing the user to select from different aspect ratios and view them in real-time, with high-definition video recording also available from within KitCam that once again allows all filters and effects to be applied over the top of the video as it is shooting. Face detection, low-light boosting, built-in composition aides, image stabilizers and auto and manual focus modes all add to the powerful and professional feature set that make the app immediately one of the best available.
