Just Under A Year Later, Samsung Has Shipped 20 Million Units Of Their Galaxy S II Smartphone

Samsung Electronics Co. have released updated sales figures which show that their popular smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S II, has surpassed the twenty million units shipped mark in its first ten months of existence in the market. The world’s number two smartphone maker say that the figures represent both domestic and international markets, but only take into account the number of units which have been shipped to service providers and don’t take into account SIM-free sales or individual customer purchases which means the figure could be significantly higher.

Reaching the twenty million units shipped in such a short space of time surpasses the success of its predecessor, the Galaxy S and makes the S II smartphone the most successful Samsung phone by a country mile. The combined sales of both the original S device as well as the new and improved S II mean that Samsung have distributed more than forty million units of the Galaxy S range with the Galaxy S III looking likely to be released in select countries in mid 2012 if reports are anything to go by.

There is no denying that twenty million devices sold in ten months represents a strong return for Samsung, but it is difficult to compare the sales with the likes of Apple considering the Korean giants have only released the figures which represent units shipped to network providers and not actual worldwide sales. The twenty million figure is over a ten month period, whereas in the last quarter alone Apple shipped 37 million iPhones, spread out across the available devices.

The Yonhap news agency has published a small press release about the Samsung sales announcements which out outlines the fact that better than expected sales of smartphone took Q4 net income for 2011 up to $3.5 billion:

SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) — Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s No. 2 smartphone maker, said Thursday that the total sales of its Galaxy S2 smartphone have surpassed the 20 million mark in domestic and overseas markets 10 months after its debut.

The sales figures represent only the number of mobile phones shipped to wireless carriers, not the number of smartphones sold to customers overall.

Strong sales of smartphones pushed up Samsung Electronics’ fourth-quarter earnings. The company reported a 17 percent rise in net income to reach 4 trillion won (US$3.5 billion) for the final quarter of last year. Its fourth-quarter operating profit reached a record high of 5.3 trillion won.
