Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  2. got a question here i already jailbroken my itouch running at 3.1.2 (used blackra1n) and if i update it to 3.1.4 to the new ios 4 will it affect the jailbreak??

    after upgrading to ios4 on my iphone then JB & unlock…my multitasking stopped working. Everything was working great. I was able to listen to music and use safari or send sms at the same time. But now when i listen to music and try something else it quits the music before opening something else.

    Any ideas?

  12. i have a 3gs, jailbroken with spirit, wondering if i restore my phone and update to the 4.0 if i can jailbreak it again as an unteathered iphone just like spirit would do? also gf has a 3g thats suuuper slow and jailbroken so she wants to restore it as well and update to 4, hers is also done with spirit. wondering if we could do this? any help would be appreciated 😀 thanks

  14. You use RedSn0w 0.9.5 to jailbreak iOS4, this only works for the iPhone 3G and iPods that aren't MC models.
    If you are using a 3GS you cannot jailbreak at the moment.

  16. Whats your baseband, i think blackra1n works on the 5.11 baseband and on 3.1.2. There is a newer and better option use “spirit”, to jailbreak and then “ultrasnow” if u need a carrier unlock. Mail me if u get any problems.

  17. i have an iphone 3gs currently on 3.1.2 with itunes 9.0 which i previously used blackra1n to jailbreak. i lost cydia and then tried to spirit it but ended up locking phone. put it into recovery mode and carried out blackrain. the blackrain logo came onto my phone but it didnt reboot just want back to apple sign. anyone knows why this has happened?

  18. i REALLY need help, i hacked my iphone with this and it works but i hate that it always had to be re-blackra1ned after restarting phone so i tried re-jailbreak with spirit hoping i wouldn’t have to be stuck with the blackra1n inconvenience and now my phone’s in recovery mode…wont work if i use blackra1n, all it does is after it reboots with blackra1n, it stays in recovery mode..can somebody help me….very much appreciated

  24. Hello, okay so, I am very new to this whole jailbreaking/unlocking thing. I just got an iPhone 3gs that is already on iOS 4, firmware 5.13.04, and has the old bootrom. Someone please help me and tell me where I should start. This phone has never been jailbroken. I've tried everything!

  41. 3gs can be jailbroken on firmware 4.0 & 4.0.1 using redsn0w .9.5 b5-5. Then unlocked with ultrasnow.

  47. ok, i have been trying to jailbreak my ipod touch for two days and i cant figure it out. They say you have to just download blackra1n and plug in your device, well i downloaded blackra1n and it pops up with make it rain like its supposed to, but it wont break my ipod.. it says that it couldnt be opened.. what do i do? i need some serious help here.. i can be reached at Gothicthuga7x@yahoo.com plz help as soon as possible
