Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  5. hi i read ur problem and i know a bunch are having the same error… what you do is download the blackra1n.exe file and navigate to
    c:/program files/common files/apple/apple application support…
    when you get here drag the blackra1n file into that folder and then right click on that file and create a shortcut on the desktop… it should work…

  14. Hey man that one is easy. All you have to do is copy and paste blackra1n.exe to this directory (for most) C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAppleApple Application Support

    This makes the application accepted by itunes

    you can download a program called blackbreeze (i think thats the name) and it will change the location the blackra1n.exe file looks for asl.dll

  18. right that worked 😀 but i did the stupidest thing after i used it( i closed my ipod touch ) and when i reopened it ,it went into safe mode so i had to restore it to the original settings…and along the ipod updated at 1.13 so now i have to downgrade my ipod i saw a video how to do it but the pb my itunes 9.1 wont let me downgrade it…i have to use 8.1 but i can't because i have win 7…do you know a different way to downgrade it?

  25. uhh. i need to jailbreak my iphone 3GS 3.1.3 MC model. does anyone know how to jailbreak it? if not, does anyone know how to downgrade it?(and ive already tried downloading the iphone 3GS 3.1.2 firmware and shift-clicked restore and it said “firmware not compatibe”, so pls dont give me BS.

  37. trying to jailbreak but after I “restore” in itunes, I try running ASL (opening it with blackra1n) but it kicks it back into iTunes and keeps giving me the error “need to restore ” msg. What am I missing?

  38. You need to copy the blackra1n.exe file into c:program filescommon filesappleapple application support and then run it from there. On a 64bit system its c:program files(x86) .. etc..

    It takes about 2 secs to run.. then reboot takes a couple min and the blackra1n program should appear on the springboard.

  42. Ok a wee quick answer to all your possible questions…

    1) The cannot find ASL.dll file and all those errors is because you MUST place them in the folder Apple Application Support usually found in /Program Files/Common Files/Apple/Apple Application Support. Then place blackra1n.exe in that folder and run from there.

    2) If you have an ipod running 3.1.3 then you can't use blackra1n yet as it will not work. it freezes on the black screen. i have tested this myself. Though if it is an iphone i think blacksn0w works for it.

  43. i understand this forum is for 3.13. but just for clarification of 3.12 tethered jailbreak, is there a fix for the tethering problem? or should i upgrade to 3.13 and then jailbreak from there?

  44. blackra1n is the most easy method to jailbreak iphone.but some bad thing, it have some disadvantage.such as youtube app is not working and when connect iphone to ifunbox, ifunbox did not show the current firmware.i got this problem,but now all of this was solved. i used push fix, and afc2add. Great method by GeoHot. Bt still waiting unlock tool for 5.12.01 bb..

  49. well i broke my 3gs 3.1.3 and got a replacement from the store when i leave the store i notice that the firmware on this brand new out the box iphone is 3.1 firmware 5.11.07. i was able to jailbreak with blackra1n and its untethered!!!!!!! unfortunately it wont sync music nor photos. is it because its os is too old? if i restore it to try to fix the sync issues and jailbreak again It will upgrade to 3.1.3 . what do u guys think i should do? by the way i do not need the unlock.

  50. Please help! I've tried this 5 times, all with different methods and now I'm sick of it. Okay, so everything went fine until it reboots. Then it doesn't show that I ever got the blackra1n app thing, and immediately starts to sync with my iTunes. I tried using tips from others like putting it on airplane mode, unplugging it, plugging it in, and then turning off WiFi, and pretty much anything anyone wrote, but nothing works. I bet there's a really easy solution that I'm just not getting… Still, help please? I'll give you my soul for an answer that works! (:
