The news of Pod2g’s progress regarding an untethered iOS 5.1.x untethered jailbreak earlier this week made for exciting reading, and via a blog post, he revealed which devices will be compatible once released. And now, pod2g has confirmed via a tweet on Twitter, that the iPhone 3GS and the third-gen iPod touch have been tested as working along with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, whilst each iPad iteration will also be supported. Although the iPad 2’s jailbreak currently only covers the Wi-Fi model, both the Wi-Fi an CDMA versions of the recently released new iPad will see the untethered jailbreak!
The latest Apple TV will not be supported, but the third and fourth-gen iPod touch devices will be, while the iPad 2 GSM/CDMA (as well as the R2 of the Wi-Fi model) remain a work in progress. While Pod2g notes the CDMA version of the very latest iPad will be jailbreakable, the global model is still being worked on – along with the second-generation Apple TV.
For the sake of clarification, here’s a definitive list of the story so far:
Supported
- iPhone 4/4S
- iPad 1
- iPad 2 (Wi-Fi only)
- iPad 3 (Wi-Fi/CDMA)
- iPod touch 3G/4G
- iPhone 3GS
- iPad 2 (GSM/CDMA/Wi-Fi R2)
- iPad 3 Global
- Apple TV 2nd Gen
- Apple TV 3rd Gen
Especially exciting is the revelation that the third-gen iPad will receive it’s first jailbreak of any kind, and although it has only been out for two months, the waiting will have been rather agonizing for those accustomed to running a jailbroken device.
It will be a couple of weeks before a jailbreak tool is fully developed and released to the public, but with the impressive progress already made, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see many more devices added before the release. In fairness, the iPad 2/new iPad and the iPhone 4/4S are the "main" devices, thus it appears the priority has been ensuring they are jailbreakable, but a more universal break will certainly be more than welcome.
Although some of the older devices can be jailbroken tethered on the newer firmware, most within the community hold out for the untether, which is infinitely more convenient than continually connecting to a PC or Mac and booting in tethered mode every time a device is switched off or rebooted. Of course, any JB is better than no JB at all, but thanks to the tireless work of pod2g et al, it looks as though our next big break will be of the untethered nature.
We keenly await any further updates regarding the jailbreak and its compatibility, and as soon as we’re made aware of them, we’ll be sure to notify you guys, so stay tuned for the latest on the jailbreak 5.1.1 untethered here at Redmond Pie.
