Two weeks ago, iOS 5 beta 5 was released and can already be jailbroken using Redsn0w, but those who were looking forward to using Sn0wbreeze on beta 5 are now able to do so with a new version of the tool that was released today.
Sn0wbreeze version 2.8 Beta 5 was announced today by iH8sn0w, the developer behind this tool, in a statement on Pastie, a site often used to share code between developers but also suitable for sharing plain text. The main feature most users will benefit from will indeed be the ability to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5, which was previously only possible using Redsn0w. Yet, Sn0wbreeze provides quite a few advantages, such as the ability to save/create custom jailbroken IPSW firmware files, with custom packages or a simple change in the boot screen logo, that can be used later on any supported devices. Redsn0w requires users to apply the same customizations every time a device is jailbroken, Sn0wbreeze simply eliminates the need to.
Once users have obtained a modified IPSW file, they can simply restore it using iTunes, with the device in DFU mode. All the instructions on how to do this are provided by the tool itself and can be found on our detailed guide. Simply use the iOS 5 beta 5 firmware where necessary.
It’s important to point out that this is a tethered jailbreak, which requires users to plug their devices to their PC’s every time it loses power or restarts. Furthermore, it require users to run iBooty, which is included in the Sn0wbreeze package, every time the device is powered on. While this method sounds painful, it’s truly the best way to jailbreak iOS 5 beta at this point, since no untethered jailbreak is expected to be released anytime before the final version of the system is released this fall.
Keep in mind that this method won’t work on the iPad 2 or the iPhone 3GS with the old baseband, yet it should work flawlessly with all the other devices. Check out the whole change log below.
* Now supports iOS 5 beta 5 (9A5228d). * Added Hacktivation ability. * Added option to remove UDID developer check/Beta Timer. * Finally decided to fix Baseband preservation standalone mode. * Tethered devices are booted via iBooty. * Re-added afc2.
