If you are looking to jailbreak iOS 17.1 on your iPhone or iPadOS 17.1 on your iPad, here’s latest status update that you may want to know about.
Now that Apple has released iOS 17.1 to the public you’re probably wondering whether you should download it. The answer for most people is that yes, you should — it gives you all the latest bug fixes and security updates as well as a handful of new features.
But what if you’re planning to jailbreak? Well, the short answer is probably that you should update anyway. The longer version? Well, it’s complicated.
The last hardware-based jailbreak was on bootrom-based checkra1n exploit for A10 and below devices. Because Apple couldn’t block that jailbreak via iOS software updates, jailbreaking was protected. However, Apple stopped supporting those devices with the release of iOS 17 which means that anyone with an iPhone X or iPhone 8 (or older) can’t install it anyway. And that obviously counts iOS 17.1 out, too. The result is that Checkra1n is no longer useful for iOS 17 running devices.
The upshot of all that is that you can’t jailbreak iOS 17 anyway, which obviously means those with modern iPhones like the iPhone 15 can’t be jailbroken at all.
Realistically, we’d suggest just updating to iOS 17.1 now and enjoying all that it has to offer. The alternative is staying on older software and hoping for a jailbreak later, but there’s little sign that’s going to be forthcoming.
