Checkra1n jailbreak for iOS 13.2 has now been shown off by developer qwertyoruiopz on Twitter. Here are the details.
Following the arrival of axi0mx’s bootrom exploit checkm8, we seem to be in the midst of something of a new jailbreaking golden age. That’s because devices running anything up to an Apple A12 processor can now be jailbroken. And importantly, there isn’t anything that Apple can do to patch it.
We’d already heard of a jailbreak for iOS 13.1.2 in October but now it seems that we can look forward to iOS 13.2 being jailbreakable, too.
At the time of writing, iOS 13.2 is the latest version of iOS and it includes all of Apple’s latest security fixes. But because checkm8 uses a bootrom exploit that runs before iOS is loaded, Apple can’t fix the bug that allows the jailbreak. With the impacted devices in the wild, they’re going to be able to be jailbroken.
That’s obviously good news for those who like to jailbreak their phones and bad news for Apple, although newer iPhones aren’t susceptible.
The tweet by qwertyoruiopz doesn’t give much away and just includes a photo of a jailbroken iPod running iOS 13.2. But that’s enough and it’s going to be an interesting few months for jailbreakers.
After years of interest in jailbreaking falling, it seems to be in the middle of a resurgence, likely thanks to checkm8. We’ll see how long that lasts, but for now, things are looking good in the community.
