A random and totally out of the blue tweet has claimed that Apple’s iOS 12 beta 9 Secure Enclave Processor (SEP) is compatible with iOS 11.3.1 firmware. From a jailbreak perspective, it means that there is a possibility iOS 12 users could downgrade to iOS 11.3.1, providing nothing changes between beta 9 and final release of iOS 12.
iPhone users have been looking towards the jailbreak community for some good news recently. It hasn’t come in the form of a Sileo release or a jailbreak tease for iOS 11.4 or iOS 11.4.1. There was some small solace with a recent Cydia Impactor upgrade to fix a rather annoying CPP 160 error but that work was nowhere near enough to appease a hungry jailbreak community literally chomping at the bit for some kind of progress or good news.
It seems that the best that the community can offer right now is the news that the iOS 12 beta 9 SEP is compatible with that of iOS 11.3.1 (not the latest iOS 11.4 or 11.4.1 though).
Why? Well, as you may know, iOS 11.3.1 is jailbreakable using the latest Electra IPA which features a compatible exploit created by Ian Beer. That means any user with a device running iOS 11.3.1 can have Electra1131 sideloaded and go through the jailbreak process on it with almost immediate success. Now, thanks to this discovery, it theoretically means that those who upgrade to iOS 12 beta 9 – or iOS 12 final if no compatibility changes are made – will be able to tinker around with FutureRestore and get themselves back down to iOS 11.3.1 should they want jailbreak. Of course, the reason for going through that process would be to get onto a version of Apple’s iOS firmware which has a jailbreak tool option available for it with immediate effect.
For those wanting to go through that process, it would mean that they would need to have their SHSH2 blobs saved as far as iOS 11.3.1 is concerned so it would actually involve a little bit of work and tinkering on the device owners behalf. Still, for those desperate for a jailbreak but also desperate to try out iOS 12, this could be one potential route forward down the line.
However, it is very possible that Apple could still make changes internally between now and the actual release date which could mean that the iOS 12 SEP wouldn’t be backwards compatible when the final version is released next month. We will keep you all updated as and when anything develops.
