Those of us partial to a jailbreak – moreover, an untethered jailbreak – have been well and truly spoiled for choice today. Although i0n1c demonstrated his method only a few hours ago, it can now be confirmed that there are three – yes, three – total methods of jailbreaking iOS 5.1 on 3rd-gen iPad, with the third jailbreak method coming from Grant Paul and Paul Griffin.
We were almost too engrossed in the new Retina display, iSight camera, A5X dual-core processor with quad-core graphics and LTE chip to worry about a jailbreak, and we certainly weren’t expecting an untethered break at such an early stage.
In a real turn-up for the books, though, we now appear to be swamped with jailbreak options, and though an official tool has yet to be released to the public.
Usually, there are a flurry of apps and tweaks waiting for Cydia enthusiasts to latch on to once a jailbreak has been discovered, but this time around, we get the impression that iPad 3 users will be lurking around for any tweaks to supplement their new, faster, visually impeccable device.
All we can see at the moment are screenshots. We know that the three jailbreaks, by iPhone-Dev Team, i0n1c, and chpwn/phoenixdev, have been discovered independently of each other, but precious little else can be revealed at such an early stage. Nevertheless, it does appear the hard work has already been done, and the first purchasers of the third-gen iPad will be among the luckiest of the early adopters.
So, brace yourselves for an update in not so distant future regarding an untethered jailbreak for all devices on iOS 5.1. As soon as one of the talented devs creates and releases an untethered jailbreak tool, we’ll cover it from top to bottom, so stay tuned to our coverage here at Redmond Pie!
For the time being, those of you running the older, A4 devices (i.e. iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod touch), can jailbreak the latest iOS 5.1 (tethered) by following the instructions posted here to jailbreak using Redsn0w, or here using Sn0wbreeze. For jailbreaking iPhone 4S and iPad 2, you can simply follow our step by step tutorial posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Absinthe on Windows or Mac. Those of you with an iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touches can use Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze to untether jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.
In the meantime, feel free to speculate which apps and tweaks you think would best compliment the new hardware features of the third-gen iPad. Leave your thoughts and opinions on our Facebook and Google+ pages, we’d love to hear them!
