Ever wished you could change your unlock and respring sounds on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch? Thanks to iStartupSound, a new iOS tweak, making this change easier than ever before.
By default, iOS plays a clicking sound whenever it’s unlocked or resprung. While effective, much of the jailbreak community has always been looking for a way to change it into something flashier, or just different. By installing iStartupSound, this new jailbreak tweak, doing so will be easier than ever. Installing this tweak will in no way change the device’s behavior and will be invisible to most unsuspecting users: in fact, this tweak doesn’t include a user interface at all. Instead, you’ll have to do the nitty-gritty work yourself, but you’ll feel glad you took the time to do it.
While it may not sound that important at first, this tweak does what many have long wished for. iStartupSound can be found on the BigBoss repository which should be added by default on Cydia. I can’t wait to find out the use tweakers will find for this.
In order to use your own sound, you will need to access the device’s file system, either from your computers or right from your phone. If you’re not sure how to go about it, plug your device into your computer and use iPhone Explorer available for both PC and Mac, or iFile for doing the same right on your phone.
Whichever way you choose, you’ll need to save the audio files in: /var/mobile directory. Check if the sound file you’re trying to use is either an Mp3, .Wav or. Caf and rename it to startup.<extension> (e.g. startup.mp3). Some sample sounds can be found on the project’s official webpage.
In order to get this tweak up and running, you can follow our step by step guide to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on iOS 4.3.4 using Redsn0w or PwnageTool (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), or iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0w, PwnageTool, Sn0wbreeze or JailbreakMe (that last one being the easiest). If you’re already using iOS 5 beta, you can jailbreak it using tools like Redsn0w (for Mac and Windows), or Sn0wbreeze. This tweak is not Apple certified or anything, therefore use caution while setting this up: remember that you’ll void your device’s warranty, so be sure that you know exactly what you’re doing.
